Dave and his cousin, Ed, were downtown breaking all the rules to pay a revenge call on Flint Abrams. To their way of thinking, cousin Rodney got slaughtered. When his body returned to the family, no marring injuries or bruising showed only a deep gash across his throat.
Young and foolish, they believed Flint murdered their cousin in cold blood.
A wrongful death.
Revenge became the name of the game as trouble trailed behind the two like a foul smell. Riled up and resentful, they craved stirring up shit.
Do some pay-back damage.
They watched from afar as Flint and a pretty lady left the Italian restaurant to make their way into the heart of downtown.
Ed fiddled with a glassine envelope and poured a line of white powder onto a flat rock he always carried. A perfect snort platform. Lots of guys had taken to using them. Ed started a trend all on his own.
Dave didnât bother pouring his cocaine onto anything, preferring heaping spoonfuls stuck far up his nose.
Both of them swayed as the high hit.
Ed hunched down, feeling a little dizzy like he had too much. Dave paced, mumbling dire death threats at Flint. Ed hoped it was to blow off steam. He couldnât see any way to head Dave off, nor how to stop him going after their prideâs alpha.
In a second of clarity, Ed realized this might end in them landing in bad shit.
As the older of the two, Dave had a greater say. âNobody fucking knows we snuck into town. We do this now.â
âHeâs with a woman!â Ed assumed sheâd be off-limits. Even young cubs knew not to mess with their alphaâs female.
âYeah, thatâs what Iâm talkinâ about. Sheâs our collateral fucking damage.â
Ed hesitated to jump in. âI say we creep in, maim Flint when heâs alone, then hightail it to the reserve for our alibi.â
âYak, yak, yak. Talkinâ ainât getting us nowhere.â Thoughts raced in Daveâs mind, going in forty different directions at once. He popped a meaty fist into his palm. âWeâre doing it now. Not too many are around tonight, so nobody sees us.â
âDurangoâs is only three blocks away! Flintâs top shifters are there, like Remington and Motorfat. Both fuckers are fast and deadly. And, Flint, heâs a fantastic fighter. We both know, heâs gonna be tough to drop.â
âYou intimidated, bro?â Dave sneered. âHe ainât as powerful as everybody thinks. He murdered our cousin. I say Flintâs gotta go.â
Ed hedged with his heart hammering from the coke. âIt only means another prick will take his place as the next pride alpha.â
âYouâre thinkinâ too much again. We act first and deal with thinkinâ later only if we have to. Thatâs the way I roll.â
âWe canât take Flint out ourselves. Youâre not thinking straight.â
âEd, you gotta pay attention. We donât touch him. We hurt her which puts a hurtinâ on him. Thatâs how we take him down. Nobodyâll know itâs us. Trust me, I know what Iâm talking about.â Dave pulled out his coke for another hefty snort.
Ed marveled at his flash of brilliance.
